Operations & Products
SFP Group produces sustainable energy at locations in Zeeland, Groningen, and Friesland.
Our focus is on biogas production, using residual streams that are no longer suitable for consumption. These residual materials whether solid, liquid, or packaged serve as nourishment for our microorganisms, which convert them into green gas, a sustainable alternative to natural gas.
Our process begins with the careful selection and processing of these residual streams in our modern feedstock halls. Here, the materials are stored, tested, and prepared to ensure optimal use in the digestion process. Biogas forms the base, while green gas is the end product safely fed into the gas network and ready to be used for cooking, heating, or as fuel.
Production statistics for our three facilities:
Production of Biogas and Green Gas
Biogas is produced through the digestion of organic material, such as manure and other residual streams. During this natural process, microorganisms convert these substances into a mixture of methane (CH₄) and CO₂, with small amounts of other gases. Biogas is a raw form of energy and still contains impurities, which makes it unsuitable for direct use in the gas network.
Green gas is purified biogas, upgraded to natural gas quality. Impurities are removed, and the methane content is raised to nearly 100%, making it safe for use in:
-
Heating homes and buildings
-
Cooking
-
Fuel for vehicles
In short: biogas is the raw material, and green gas is the usable end product.
At SFP Group, we efficiently convert biogas into green gas, produced entirely sustainably and circularly. This contributes to a clean energy supply and a greener future, while making optimal use of local residual streams.
Fun fact: residual streams that would otherwise go to waste are given a new purpose as energy for immediate use a smart step toward a circular economy.
Production of organic Fertilizer
Also known as digestate, this is the product that remains after biogas production. Digestate contains valuable minerals and can be used as an organic fertilizer.
It replaces synthetic fertilizers, which are produced using fossil natural gas, thereby reducing CO₂ emissions and helping protect the climate.
Additionally, digestate stimulates soil life, supports sustainable soil management, and contributes to a healthy and resilient ecosystem. In this way, we close the loop on organic waste and make a natural contribution to sustainable agriculture.
Our fertilizers are available in both solid and liquid forms, tailored to different applications.
Production of Bio-CO₂
Bio-CO₂ is a sustainable byproduct released during the production of green gas. Instead of letting this CO₂ escape, it is captured, purified, and reused as a valuable raw material, giving a natural residual stream a second life across various sectors.
Bio-CO₂ is used for, among other applications:
-
Fertilizer in greenhouse horticulture: CO₂ enhances photosynthesis and supports crop growth. Using Bio-CO₂ results in a more efficient cultivation process with reduced reliance on fossil CO₂ sources.
-
Refrigerant in the food industry: thanks to its clean and stable properties, Bio-CO₂ is suitable for cooling, freezing, and maintaining product quality.
The use of Bio-CO₂ contributes to a circular economy: residual streams are utilized, fossil CO₂ is replaced, and the overall CO₂ emissions of the chain are reduced. In this way, we make a tangible contribution to more sustainable energy and food production.
